The Best Bargain Destinations for Travel in February

When many people think “winter travel,” they consider only the obvious: warm weather spots like southern Florida or the always popular Caribbean islands. However, travelers who are willing to expand their options, and pack their winter coats, can find bargains when traveling in winter, especially during the month of February.

Here are some destinations that are typically a great value for travelers in February.

Europe. It’s the off season for European travel. Colder temperature and less-than-perfect weather keep tourists away, which means travelers who visit Europe in February will likely spend less time fighting crowds at popular cultural attractions. Travel websites recommend these destinations among others: Venice, Italy; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Seville and Barcelona in Spain; and Madeira, Portugal.

Tulum, Mexico. Tulum is located on Mexico’s east coast and many of its beaches are free to visit. Visit Mayan ruins, underground caverns and swimming holes before spring breakers arrive.

Québec City. Travelers who expect cold and snow won’t be disappointed. People who live in Quebec City celebrate winter with a Winter Carnival, scheduled this year from January 27 to February 12. This year’s celebration will highlight Canada’s 150th anniversary of the Canadian confederation.

Puerto Rico. For the best deals, skip the oceanfront hotels and stay inland. Or rent a home or condo for a week or more near Old San Juan. Rental car rates are generally affordable and travelers from the United States don’t need a passport to visit.

Costa Rica. It’s dry season in Costa Rica and also the most popular season to visit. However, costs for travel to Costa Rica and expenses once you’re there remain relatively low, making it an affordable vacation destination whatever the season.

New Orleans, Dallas, Austin and Las Vegas. Decent to good weather, lower demand for hotel rooms, some good deals on airfare and plenty to see and do make each of these U.S. destinations popular and affordable in February. But travelers won’t find deals in New Orleans in late February, as Mardi Gras begins Feb. 28 this year.

Depending on how far they’re traveling and how long they’ll be away from home, travelers may want to consider purchasing travel medical insurance.

Research Medical Escort Companies

Of course, most people who purchase medical travel insurance never have to use it. Another way to prepare for the unexpected is to research medical escort companies. For travelers who become ill or suffer a serious accident far from home, a medical escort can make it possible to return home on a commercial airline flight.
