Travel Weekly Interviews SentinelMED’s Lori Calavan about Medical Evacuations for COVID-19 and Working During a Pandemic

The last few weeks have been incredibly busy for the SentinelMED team, including Lori Calavan, PA-C. In addition to determining the course of care for patients who need medical evacuation for COVID-19, Calavan also puts in long days as a physician assistant in Connecticut. She is currently working in the intensive care unit at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Harford.

“As we’ve seen around the world, it’s all hands on deck,” Calavan recently told Travel Weekly in an interview published on April 27, 2020.

Calavan spoke to reporter Jamie Biesiada about her work with Allianz Global Assistance as a senior medical advisor. SentinelMED provides outsourced medical case management to holders of Allianz’s travel insurance policies. In that role, Calavan has collaborated with physicians outside the United States to coordinate care for patients and their families.

In the interview, Calavan also discussed how COVID-19 has greatly changed routines at St. Francis, including how the medical team does rounds and its visitor policy. With a population of almost 125,000, Hartford has reported close to 5,000 COVID-19 cases and more than 500 deaths as of May 4, 2020.

“It’s very challenging,” Calavan told Travel Weekly. “Because we’re working more hours just to have the coverage for the Covid patients, it’s definitely tiring, but we took an oath, and that is what we do.”

According to its website, Travel Weekly and TravelWeekly.com “are the most influential B2B news resources for the travel industry.” They provide travel professionals with in-depth coverage of all aspects of all business sectors.
